We are now around 6 weeks into Lockdown 3.0 and if you, like many others, decided to take the opportunity to grow a beard, you are certainly not alone! Some call it the corona beard or the isolation beard. Whatever your term for it in the early days it likely made your life a bit easier. Working from home means you don’t need to turn up in the office clean-shaven every day, and if you always wanted to try out a beard but wasn’t sure the lockdown restrictions created the perfect conditions for trying out something different.
After 6 weeks of growth, you are probably now wondering how to keep your new facial hair looking its best. Since you can’t pop to your favourite barber for a tidy up, here are our top tips for keeping your beard in tip-top condition:
Keep it clean.
It might sound obvious but keeping your beard hair clean will prevent it from going dry, coarse and tough while it grows, it’s amazing how many bearded heroes miss this trick! Also important if you don’t want to give your poor partner a pash-rash! Using a beard shampoo and conditioner will keep it smelling fresh and feeling smooth!
Brush it.
This is an especially important step if you are preparing to trim your beard. Brushing also brings a whole host of additional benefits, not just untangling your facial hair, it exfoliates the skin, enhances blood circulation as well as promoting hair growth. After giving it a good brush wash it through again to get rid of all those unsightly flaky bits.
Trim Time
After your beard has been growing for a few weeks, it’s likely to be looking a little scruffy and unkempt. So unless that’s the look you want to rock it’s time for a trim. Firstly you’ll want to snip those hairs that are clearly longer than the others, what you're aiming for is the beard shape to match the shape of your face. We recommend brushing your beard hair upwards, so you can clearly identify those longer ones so you can begin snipping them back into line. If you do make a small mistake, don’t worry it will grow back!
Once you’ve given your hair a little trim with the scissors, it’s time to tackle the peach fuzz on your cheeks and the hair lower down on your neck. It’s likely that it hasn’t grown in a perfectly crisp straight line so it’s time to take a razor and neaten up those lines. We would recommend using a transparent shaving gel so you can see what’s going on and make it less likely you will accidentally cut into the hairline. The key here is to make sure you shave evenly on each side as much as possible. If done correctly it’ll give your beard a smart appearance and your facial hair will look thicker and fuller as a result.
If you follow our tips above these will keep your beard in reasonable shape while we barbers are unable to give you that professional touch. We can’t wait to see you back in the chair very soon for a good post-lockdown hair and beard cut.
